April – May
Pre-run-off is the best-kept secret in Montana! The rivers are fishing well and are typically low with great visibility. Run-off usually doesn’t begin until late May or early June, and you can expect a lot of streamer and nymph fishing with possibilities for early caddis and mayfly hatches.
A great time to fish. Bring your cold weather layering system. Gloves and a beanie are good to have this time of year.
June
This is usually a month of higher water in Southwest Montana. June can still offer tremendous fishing. In anticipation of the salmon fly hatch this is a good time to fish a lot of stone fly nymphs for big browns.
July - August
Late June and early July bring the salmon flies on the Madison and the Big Hole. July offers a lot of great caddis fishing and in August it’s time to start thinking big dry flies! The hopper fishing is tremendous, and this is the time to fish big attractor patterns.
September
For the local anger, this is their favorite month! Gorgeous scenery all around and you can still fish hoppers and big attractor patterns. Big trout are beginning to eat large streamer patterns. You can expect temperatures to be in the 70’s with the rivers low and clear.
Late September - Mid October
Not only small dry flies for big pods of urgently feeding trout, but pulling streamers is primetime! Do not worry about the weather, just be prepared for colder nights and days and the rewards are worth it. Big trout!
