FLAMING GORGE RESORT

Wyoming
Destination Overview

The section of the Green River downstream from the Flaming Gorge Dam is legendary in fly fishing circles and is one of those bucket list destinations that doesn’t require flying halfway around the world to experience. Imagine floating on a river of crystal clear water as you observe thousands of trout skittering out of the way as the drift boat passes over their holding lies. A look up at the canyon walls will make it obvious why this is called Flaming Gorge, as the reds and gold hues reflecting off of the walls is absolutely astonishing.

The resort offers the best accommodations in the Flaming Gorge National Recreation Area.  It is located in the heart of Ashley National Forest and is surrounded by beautiful mountains and wildlife.

The resort, located on the bluff above the gorge, is all inclusive in that the resort offers activities for both fishermen and for non fishing families.  Fly fishing is the activity that the resort is most famous for, but many of its guests are non fishing couples and families that enjoy the hiking, rafting, kayaking, and nature observation in the area.  Several golf courses are close by too.

Fishing Program

This world-class, blue-ribbon, trout fishery is home to Browns, Rainbows, Cutthroats, and Cut-Bow Hybrid Trout.  The Division of Wildlife Resources in Utah states that the Green River has between 8,000 and 22,000 fish per mile between the dam and Red Creek rapids. Some Browns and Rainbows have gone over 30 inches.  Flaming Gorge Resort takes pride in offering one of the best guiding services on the legendary Green River in Utah. Each guide has years of experience and quite a long list of extremely happy clients. If you're looking to spend a day with a guide on the Green River, Flaming Gorge Lodge is the right place to find that someone whom you can ensure will not only help you put fish to the net and help you become a better fisherman, but also go out of their way to make your trip unforgettable. Full-day trips include transportation to and from the Green River, soft drinks, hearty lunches, and an experienced guide along with their expert personal instruction.

The river is broken up into three stretches that are delineated by different water types:

“A” Section: The most upstream and popular section within the Gorge flows from the dam for 7.6 miles to what is called Little Hole.  The “A” Section holds the highest number of fish per mile and is accessed by boat, raft and wading.

“B” Section: This section starts at Little Hole and flows for 9 miles to Indian Crossing boat ramp.  The quantity of fish decreases in this section but so do the number of fisherman. That being said, the quality of fishing still remains at a high level.

“C” Section: The river in this section flows for 12 miles to Swallow Canyon boat ramp.  Some of the largest fish come out of this section.
